Trend Decoder is back! We started Season 1 with this segment, and it only felt right to end with it too. Tonight’s trend: Show Me Your Grip.
Rachel went full spiral before landing on something that honestly exceeded the actual trend: a metaphor for holding on through 50 episodes, through a whole year, through all of it. Jen’s take was literal — the viral trend of women showing everything stacked in one hand as they walk out the door in the morning — keys, coffee, water bottle, sunglasses, lip stuff, and approximately four other things that don’t fit in women’s pockets because women’s pockets are a joke.
Rachel also proposed activating Stitch mode (six arms, no waiting) and theorized a carpal tunnel gender gap study. So yes, it went places.

This is a listener favorite that we had we didn't do it for a very long time. We brought it back for our lovely friend Tracy. We started season one with it and now we're ending with it. That's fucking right. We are. It's gonna be hilarious. So this is when I name a trend that I am very familiar with, and Rachel, who is not at all familiar with it, I'm assuming. I'm always assuming she's not familiar with it. She's not as chronically online as I am. Um she tries to guess what the trend actually is. Yes. And so tonight's tonight, the trend, the one. We only have one tonight. This is a condensed episode. What if I nail it? Then I mean we might need a backup. We'll see. That's okay because I I I can come up with a backup. Okay. Okay. Yeah, I can definitely come up with a backup. Okay.

She had a perfect score last week, if you remember from in episode 49, she had a perfect score. I have not forgotten. Uh I thought that was so much fun. Tonight, I'm hoping for a little more hilarity. We will see what happens.

SPEAKER_00I feel like it's all in the name tonight. The name of the trend is Show Me Your Grip.
SPEAKER_02Yes. What are you doing?
SPEAKER_00Always pick the ones with the best names.
SPEAKER_02You know my mind went.
SPEAKER_00I know exactly where your mind went, and I know where a lot of our listeners' minds went too.
SPEAKER_02Well, mine went into the gym. Did it? You know?
SPEAKER_00Of course it did. That's what I meant.
SPEAKER_02The gym. Okay. No, so obviously, I mean, hmm, I guess. Show me your grip. Show me your grip. I I assume that would be like something that a man would send a woman on a dating app as an opening line.
SPEAKER_00Oh boy, what would that and what do you think that would insinuate?
SPEAKER_02I think it would insinuate a little bit of uh sexual tension, perhaps, um, and just seeing how DTF they truly are being on the dating apps. Um, and I follow this page, I forget, I don't know what it's called or who it is, but it's like this guy, and she opens it, she goes, making my bosses read your your dating app messages. And they go through and read them, and it's two guys that and like and they'll read these and they'll just be like, What? This guy is not okay. Why would he say that? Or like like so many things in it. That's kind of what that reminded me of. But I that's not it, right? Oh, it's definitely not it. You wouldn't feed me one like that.
SPEAKER_00You just wanted to hear my I just want to see where your imagination goes, Rachel. I love to see a spiral.
SPEAKER_02Let her cook. Show me your grip. Then I am like, I feel like it could be like a workout-related thing. Like, what grip do you use? It could also be sports-related. Like, show me what your grip is on like a golf club or a baseball bat. Gotta line up the knuckles. Gotta line them up. That's what it's. Football season's coming. Oh, it sure is. How show me your grip over the laces? Laces out! Laces out! We know. Not with throwing the ball, but with kicking it. Um so I'm thinking, show me your grip. To me, it sounds like how hard are you willing to stick to something? That's kind of what I get for like I'm trying to think of what they post, like, show me your grip. Like, we made it all the way to episode 50. Show me your grip. Like, we started this thing and we gripped on tight and we did it every week and we held through it, and like, show me your grip. Like, or like grip, grit, whatever you want to call it. I feel like that would be a cool trend. It'd be like, show me your grip. Like, how hard are you gonna hold on to something? How hard are you gonna work to hold on to this? That's fucking right. And make it into something. That's kind of how I feel would be the best trend. I love that. That's not it, but it might be better.
SPEAKER_00Okay, boom. Okay, so let's okay, let's think about for what we as women, we multitask, right? We juggle a lot of things at one time, right? Okay. I already have an idea of okay, alright. Tell me what you think it is based off that hint.
SPEAKER_02I feel like it's like gotta be like a woman, like specifically, if you're talking about a woman or anybody, like getting all their stuff done and handling it, but then like it's a video of them at home, like just destroyed and dishoveled, or like or like drinking wine out of the box or something crazy while they're in the bathtub. Or I like this.
SPEAKER_00Or like that's our new trend.
SPEAKER_02There's a couple, like, okay, that's not it either. Show so like what was your hint again? I got off. Multitasking. Okay, well, I'm like multitasking and doing all that. So, what's your grip? Because I feel like losing your grip is a term like I lost my grip on that. Yeah, let it get away. So, show me your grip. Maybe it's like all the different things that you can do in a day that they show you that you did in a day, and then you're getting so much warmer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00This one is a little more literal.
SPEAKER_02Oh, get a grip. That's just what I think. That's just what I think. That's where I was going with my like dishovel thing. Like, they're they hit hold on to their grip all day, and then at the end of the day, they're just like, ah.
SPEAKER_00So think about what happens when you're walking out the door in the morning. For me, I go through my routine. Like, you're grabb- what are you doing in the morning? Like when you're just literally going out the door.
SPEAKER_02Well, maybe it's what you grab in the morning before your day. So, like, I grab my work backpack, I grab my snackslash lunch to put in my bag, I grab my ice cubes and my water, I grab my phone and turn off my alarms. Because I have one that tells me when I need to leave, then I can I know I can snooze it for five minutes to finish what I'm doing to get out the door. And then um I grab the door handle, I grab the car door handle, I grab my phone and plug it in. I push the garage door opener.
SPEAKER_00You're so on you're so on the right track.
SPEAKER_02I don't think I'm gonna get it.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I think I'm gonna go ahead and tell you because you're so right on the brink. Okay, pick up your sunglasses and hold them in your hand. Okay. And keep your and then now pick up your keys and hold them in the same hand. Oh shoot. Pick up your lip stuff and put that in your hand. Pick up the matchbook, put that in your hands.
SPEAKER_02Does it have to all be in one hand? I don't use matches in your hands.
SPEAKER_00It has to all be in your hand. Pick up your water bottle, put that in your hand. Show me your grip, Rachel. I got it. So, like this one, like if we did it as our podcast, like we would have our microphone in our hand, we would have our phone in our hand, we would have our tripod in our hand, we would have probably our lip stuff in our hand because we're always doing that. I love it. Like, it's all the stuff that's in your hand to do what you need to be doing. Because we as women, like, we like if you notice in the morning, your hands are always fucking full, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely. I have my backpack on my back and I like shove my pockets for the lip drink. I have my water in my hand or my coffee or both, and I have my phone and my keys, and let's hope I have pockets for the day. And then and then, yeah, exactly. And then that's it. And then I cram the door with my little claw that's left and shut it with my butt because I don't have claw left. And then, no, and actually, that's hilarious. I love that so much because I've said for so long, like, it is freaking crazy. Like, every anytime any man is not every time, because I'm just now I've learned to be like, yes, please do grab that. But um, yes, please help. But a lot of like I just automatically do it. And the reason that women can grab so many things and figure out how to hold so many things at one time without losing track of them is because our pockets have been designed either non-existent, fake, or teeny tiny. Do you see how big my phone is? Right? This phone is almost as big as my face. It really is as big as your face. You can't even see my face. It's huge. Do you think that's gonna fit in a pocket that's two inches deep? That's fucking right. Oh my gosh. No, yeah, absolutely not. I get it. All of you dads out there with the little clip-on belt situation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't get it for you because you have pockets, but I know, and their pockets are always so much deeper than ours. Yeah, so annoying. So you want you like see us with our coffee, our water bottle, our keys, our sunglasses, our lipstick. Yeah. It's yeah, that is the grip. That is showing that.
SPEAKER_02If you have children and you have to gather all their stuff as well, and their jacket and their shoes that they didn't put on. Exactly. Like their snacks and all the things that they dropped that you still have to pick up and all of that. So, yeah, I get I really think that there's something special about women's hands that we've developed over the years. We figured it out. Like, we know how to hold all the things.
SPEAKER_00Like, we're utilizing all of these fingers twice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's also why I have carpal tunnel now. Probably so. If you think about it, yeah. I would like to see a study on that. How many men versus women are more likely to develop carpal tunnel? It depends, though. There's a little bit of a few minutes. It would be interesting to jobs that like riveting and stuff that a lot of men are in like that.
SPEAKER_00So a lot of carpal tunnel. Yeah, it really is, but like we as women, we just we can't help ourselves. Like, I find myself like getting out of like I so sometimes I'll stop at Starbucks on my way to work, and then I'm like, getting how do I get out of the car and do all of this in one load with my bag, my coffee, my water drug, my phone, my sunglasses, my keys. Like, how am I doing all of this? And somehow, like, it's all wrapped up on one hand so that I can still close the door and then get into the building like with the other hand while this hand is like full of everything.
SPEAKER_02Super power that would be cool to have. Like, I want to grow some stitch arms, like just be able to like like I can take notes with one hand with two hands while I'm like walking around holding everything. Like, yeah. Oh yeah, hang on, let me write that down. Like, what my hand? How crazy would that be? Like stitch mode. Stitch mode.
SPEAKER_00Activate stitch mode. That's crazy. I love that one. That's good.
SPEAKER_02But honestly, I think I came up with some really cool you really did, honestly.
SPEAKER_00Like a couple of them I thought was better than I don't know. I really like this one because it's a symbolic kind of it is very symbolic of the multitasking, but but your one about like look at us holding our grip through 50 episodes. I was like, yeah, damn straight. Like, that is fucking awesome. I love that. Hey, that's not a bad thing. A lot of times these are very metaphorical. That's fair. But today was very literal. I liked that one. That was a good choice. It was really fun. Good one, Jen. Thank you very much. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00I think we do too. Like, we're gonna need to get out there and take photos of just us holding hands.

SPEAKER_00And every grip. Every location we can. Or like this is our grip. Okay, we can do both. We'll hands in. It'll do tickets. Like our belly, which taught tickets, like with our wine glasses. Maybe just watch for a social post. Yeah, it's gonna be fun. That's an Easter egg. Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_02Go look in. Yeah. Gosh, so these Easter eggs won't rot.
SPEAKER_00So I feel like I feel like Trend Decoder is a segment that we'll definitely want to make sure we keep.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, because we're always coming out with new ones.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it's always so much fun. And I feel like we just started back with it. So look for more trend decoder fun in season two. We will be we will be launching season two. Well, we're I think we're gonna take a two-week break, and then we'll be launching season two. So we we gotta regroup. We have some things that we gotta talk about, plan out, execute. Oh, yeah. So that when we come back in season two, we're just a little more polished. Yeah. No, I know that messy is our polished, but we want to be a little more refined, kind of polished. Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00So oh, and when we were there last week with all the ducks. The whole gathered ducks. It was so cute. So precious. There's a whole white flock now, too. Did you see the white flock while you were there? I I feel like I did. We haven't had white ducks. Very, very cute. Yeah. We haven't, well, they weren't babies. They were they were like pretty big.
SPEAKER_02I first thought they were swans because we haven't had big ducks. Yeah, you mentioned that your brother's like, no, those are ducks. I know, but I was like, but we haven't seen them around here before. They're newbies. I swear people keep letting their like domesticated ducks out into the wild, and that's how we get all these ducks. There's like strange tuxedo-looking ducks out there, too. Oh. I don't know, that or our water back there's just real weird. I don't know. But yeah, then there's little babies that are just the size of your little hanging hopping around. You can probably see them in some of the holes of the yard. I'm like, where'd he go? Um, anyways, yeah, that was a tangent. But yeah, excited to see my mom this weekend. Her birthday is today, so happy birthday, mama. Happy birthday. Yeah, so that'll be good. So we could, because I have like a belated Mother's Day and a birthday. That's perfect. I love that so much. Yes. Let's see what else is going on today.

I'm the mad hatter. Okay, so we're gonna dive right into this. Like, I feel like honestly, though, the way that my brain works, a lot of the time I am very mad hatter-ish. I'm not, I'm late, I'm late. I'm very like all over the board all the time. And sometimes a little bit emotional about my little bit at the tea party, doesn't he? Oh, yeah, he does. Absolutely. And I have a tendency to kind of do that too. Anyone that has ever worked with me or been in a personal relationship, like friendship with me, you you know the spirals.

SPEAKER_00They're not fun. Very madhatter, not crazy, but mad.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh. How do you feel? So out of the two, I'm torn because I just love the Mad Hatter's character. Like, I honestly got a huge perspective on who the Mad Hatter is actually based on off of Allison Chains, which you know, of course. Is that what it's like? Oh, Alice by Heart. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, that's okay. Alice in Change is a rock band, I think. Yes, it is. Yes. It's just like a metal band, I think. It is because it's kind of a dark play, Alice by Heart. So it is very dark and so metal. You were so quiet. That's why I paused and looked at you and was like, do you know what I mean? I was like, wait, what? I was like, I shouldn't have this play, but wait, it's because I'm wrong. No, Alice by Heart. So that's why I'm like, I'm not the Mad Hatters, because like I don't go mad like that. But also, like, in a way, and there is a little part inside my brain that probably does do that. But just that aside, just Alice in Wonderland, I love how creative he is. Yeah. But I also feel like honestly, where I am in this world, and I'm wearing white, I feel like I wear a white rabbit. But I think if I didn't choose those characters, I would probably be a mixture of Alice and I don't know either the Cheshire or Cat or the Caterpillar. Yeah, oh, I love that. The caterpillar is a little bit. I know, but I feel like I'm Alice in that because I love Alice is so inquisitive. I like being inquisitive. I like diving into the whimsy stuff and the unknown and like kind of like going against what is exactly what you need to do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But also, I don't know, but I I But then the caterpillar is so laid back. And then the Cheshire Cat's just like devil's advocate and everything. You're right.
SPEAKER_02The Cheshire Cat's a little bit more sinister, maybe, than I am, but I feel like oh yeah, I feel like m half would be Alice, and the other half would be a mixture of the caterpillar and the cat. Okay. Does that make sense? Yeah. Because it's like sinister and laid back at the same time. Okay, that makes sense. Because I feel like to be so sinister, you have to be laid back and not really care that much. I think so. So it's like a whole personality wheel. Yeah. So I'm really cheating because I'm picking like three or four characters. Oh, okay. But no, I I love that. I also now need to re-watch Alice in Wonderland because I don't remember that much about the character and how it was portrayed in all the different movies of the caterpillar and the cat.
SPEAKER_00You and I should do that. Fun! We really should. So we've seen Alice by Heart recently, but we should honestly, before we go see Alice in Wonderland, we should watch it. We should dress up.

Um, so okay, looking back a little bit though, so this will be I don't even know how many shows that we've gotten to go to for Ballet Wichita because they just keep letting us come to things because they're amazing and we love them. I think what is this gonna be like our fourth or fifth production that we get to go to in one year? So we've so we've been to Dracula.
SPEAKER_02If you're only counting this year, I feel like it's been more.
SPEAKER_00We've been to Dracula, we've been to the Nutcracker, we've been to Breaking Barriers, Elephants, Warfare Elephants. Well, that was Broadway and Wichita, and we've been to the Sparkling Social, which I feel like was still kind of a production. So this will be our fifth show, yes, technically, with Ballet Wichita in one year. I don't I feel like you're I feel like we're like blurring the Broadway Wichita Ballet Wichita line. Yeah, that's true. Because they're always a century too.
SPEAKER_02Well, and a lot of the same people on the board are the same. So a lot of people on the board are on both boards. So for me, you know, it's yeah, when we're at one, we talk about both.
SPEAKER_00And we see the same people at both. So that that's probably people who appreciate ballet also appreciate theater. Imagine that. It's the wildest thing. Crazy. I just love that I don't this developed within months. It all started with Brent saying, Hey, I love your podcast one night out at the brickyard, and then look, look at where we are. Um we have two merch lines that benefit Ballet, Wichita. And we're on our fifth show, fifth situation with them.
SPEAKER_02And not to mention all of like the posts that they promote us with and we promote them with.
